We use anatomical pathology tests to help diagnose disease by directly examining the affected tissue, often under a microscope. This includes a range of tests from evaluating biopsies in diagnosing potential cancers to evaluating routine pap smear test results.
Blood chemistry
Blood chemistry tests measure the components in a sample of blood. These are used in many routine health evaluations and can reveal a vast amount of information about the body.
For example, tests for high cholesterol, pregnancy, and liver disease are all performed through a blood sample. Blood chemistry tests also can assess thyroid function and determine if a person has, or is at risk for, developing diabetes.
Coagulation testing measures the levels of components in the blood that contribute to its clotting ability. Low levels of clotting factors may indicate liver disease, cancer or genetic problems such as hemophilia. They also can indicate bone marrow disease as well as the presence of snake venom.
Hematology
Hematology is the study of the blood. The routine hematology screening tests for abnormalities in the blood is the complete blood count (CBC). The results of the CBC are useful in diagnosing anemia, leukemia and infections.
Testing of the patient’s serum or plasma to detect and identify clinically significant antibodies that may affect the transfusion of blood products or otherwise impact patient care in cases such as pregnancies.
Immunology
Immunology is both the study of the human immune system and the field of medicine that treats diseases of the immune system. Immunity is the body’s ability to resist a disease and the immune system is a body-wide network of interacting systems: bone marrow, white blood cells, the entire lymph system and skin.
Since the immune system is so broad, encompassing everything from blood cells to skin, immunology is a very broad field of study. The treatment of disorders as simple as common allergies and as complex as AIDS all fall under the immunology category.
We are a proud supporter of the "Drugs Don’t Work" program established by the Toombs-Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. Through a combined community effort, we hope to establish a safe and more productive work place for participating Vidalia businesses.
Microbiology
Microbiology is the science that unlocks the doors to identifying microorganisms. From identifying bacterium which causes urinary tract infections to testing for the mecA gene associated with identifying MRSA, we provide the latest technology encompassing old methodology with new ones.
Our laboratory offers instrumentation to aid in microorganism identification and susceptibility. We provide an unlimited amount of knowledge in all areas of microbiology – from head to toe.
Phlebotomy
Phlebotomy is collecting blood from the body. Regular phlebotomy can be used to help those with dangerously high iron levels or those who overproduce red blood cells.
During phlebotomy, you will sit or lie down while a phlebotomist places a needle in your arm. After collecting the appropriate specimen for tests that your doctor requested, the sample will be positively identified before being sent to the lab for analysis.
